accidental video/open action

The Koneko might be closed, but there's lights on in the workroom of the shop. Just off screen, a low voice hums off key, soft scraping noises and the low whine of a dog marring the offset tune. Off to the side of the table lay several colorful flowers; purple hyacinth and amaranth, plus a single red carnation tossed on top of the pile along with some assorted greenery. Every now and again, a hand moved into sight and deftly snatches up a stem here and there, shifting through the stems to find the right one.

Those are pretty.

There's a bark from the dog just as the humming voice mutters a soft curse.

... thanks. Sorry. I didn't realize it was on.

It's okay. It's nice to see something pretty after the last week.

I agree. I think that's why I came in here tonight.

Is it making you feel better?

You know, I haven't decided yet. Maybe I'll know once I finish this arrangement.

I hope so.

It makes me feel better to watch.

Like something's right and normal again, you know?

Yeah, actually. I think I know how you feel. It's been a while since I let myself work with flowers. I've been too busy.

I grow them. On the roof of the Library and by my house a little. But I don't think I could arrange them all pretty and nice like that.

Why wouldn't you think so?

'Cause I'm not good at fancy stuff. Just ordinary plain old stuff.

You don't have to be good at fancy stuff. Trust me, I'm not and if you think this is fancy, you should see what Aya can do with flowers. He's amazing.

Sometimes I look in windows of flower places and they're all just so nice...

I just look at mine growing.

A lot of arrangements come from the heart, you know.

[He said he didn't know if he wanted to be alone or not. So, just for that possibility, for the chance he ends up deciding he doesn't want to, Umi slipped out of the beach house and walked all the way to the shop that night.

But she doesn't enter the greenhouse. She just stays outside, watching Ken from behind the glass.

This is her way to give him space while still being there for him. Or so she tells herself. The truth is... she also needs him. But this close is enough to know he's there, still going, maybe even doing a bit better. She's far enough to go unnoticed. He can ignore her and pretend he doesn't just as easily, too. That'll still be fine.]

I don't... I wouldn't want to wreck the flowers, you know? They're too pretty.

Maybe so, but how else does a person learn? You have to make mistakes.

I guess.

Doesn't seem fair to the poor flowers, though.

But maybe if you take them home anyway and tell 'em you're sorry.

... good job, Bandit. Hell of a watchdog.

There are books on it, too.

I'm good with books!

I figured, since you work at the library.

Re: voice

[identity profile] livingmyths.livejournal.com 2010-11-03 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Well, or at least that I like them, if I work there!

[identity profile] soulofocean.livejournal.com 2010-11-03 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Wh-? No! Bandit, stay! Sit! Just-! Shhhh!!

[Too late. And imagine that. Her perfectly stealthy scheme ruined by the pet. No wonder she's never going to get along with animals. So where does that leave Umi? Sort of standing there like a moron and hoping he's not too mad at her.]

I think it takes a special touch to work there. Every time I go in there, it either eats my hat or hides the books I want to look at.
