No saying I told you so. [Someone sounds grumpy.]

Sighing, Ken moves the ever present Gent from his lap in order to go talk to Mara, face to face. While it's obvious he's pale and worn out himself, there's no missing the worry on his face, either.

"I wasn't planning on rubbing it in."

"Thank you."

She's curled up on their bed, a bag of ice now on her neck and the circles under her eyes even more noticeable.

"Maybe I should go to the hospital." Her tone says the opposite. She hates doctors and the hospital, despite spending so much time there.

After settling next to her, he carefully moves the bag to look her neck over once again. He's suspicious of what's happening, as it's happening to him, too, but for now, he's carefully silent on that topic.

"There's no bruising or... anything else to explain the pain you're in. They're more than likely not going to be able to help much."

As soon as the ice is back in place, he starts stroking her hair, the touch as gentle as he can manage.

The gentle touch feels good, and her eyes close.

"It feels like I'm being stabbed or something's digging in."

There's a tremor in her voice because it scares her. People said something about curses and phantom pains and she hates pain.

"Yeah. I know how you feel.... I've had it going on for a few days, too."

His hand never stops moving.

"... I can give you something guaranteed to put you out for twelve or so hours. If you want that."

She rolls over onto her back to look up at him, a questioning look in her eyes.

"I thought you didn't want me taking anything." He'd seemed very adamant about that.

"I still don't, but this is something I'm pretty familiar with. Besides having been trained on how to use it, I've had to have it given to me several times. Thankfully, it's not habit forming."

He lets his hand move to stroke her cheek, his worry evident.

Sitting up, she wraps her arms around his waist, resting her head against him. "What about you?"

Not as many as before the harpies-thing, certainly.
I have them, though. [Not sounding very happy, naturally]

Anything special about them?

Aside from the fact that they shouldn't be there? No.

Felt them a day or two ago. Sounds like a couple people have.

Did you notice anything odd about them?

It's just coming from an old [ a pause, hesitating ] scar on my chest.

Thought it'd heal up by now.

That seems to be the case for a lot of the people that's experiencing it.

Even if I got the thing before I got here?

Old wounds have a habit of hurting around here. Part of the magic of the city.

[ Sigh, then sarcastically: ] Good to know.

[Eagle isn’t going to openly admit to feeling the affects of the Phantom Pains himself… ]

Is the young lady feeling any better?

Not really.

[He didn’t really think so. ]

I am sorry to hear that.
Last time, the pains seemed to subside after the barrier was restored… when the clock became louder for a while. Beyond going to see why the clock has become silent, I can’t think of a more permanent solution. But, that might not be possible. I understand the underground has shifted?

It has. Quite a bit, from what I've heard and seen.

You okay?

.... not really. Mara's been using drugs to try and counter what seems to be phantom pains that others in the City seem to be experiencing.

I saw. Anything I can do other than shift the schedule around so you have a few days off?

... ask around. See if anyone else is having them as well. I've noticed that mine almost seem to be where I've got some of my heavier scarring. Old injuries, and such.

I'll keep my eyes open. Remember how people experienced these phantom pains before the barrier fell? Maybe whatever was going on then is still happening.

That's what I was thinking. We need to keep an eye on it.

Might have something to do with the word people have been seeing. I'd almost bet on it, though we shouldn't discard the option that they're unrelated.

It wouldn't shock me, but really, nothing in this city does anymore.

Must be nice to get to that point.

Barely anyone, compared to last time. It's completely unfair.

How long have they been going on for you?

They started sometime last month but let up. This time...eight hours or so.
